Well, tonight’s the night: the worldwide premiere of the 13th season of the Bachelorette! If you don’t think that watching 31 men compete for the hand and heart of one woman isn’t the best way to spend your Monday night, then you wouldn’t be alone. But, the Bachelor franchise, despite all of its faults, has always been one of my favorite shows – especially the first night.
The first night of the Bachelorette is all about first impressions. You get once chance to introduce yourself and stand out from the crowd – not to mention make yourself memorable to the millions of people watching and judging you. I love this night because for all of the dramatics, drunk contestants, and uncomfortably over-the-top jokes, there is something to be said for the romance of a first impression.
Call me old fashioned, but I do still believe in the idea of love at first sight. Of course, love takes way more than that to work, but it’s an idea I’ll always enjoy. It’s also an idea that relates to much more than my love-life. First impressions are wildly important when it comes to the games that we decide to play. One good trailer or E3 presentation can get you excited for a game that won’t even be out for years. Just look at Last Guardian or Death Stranding.
I had a similar moment last year with God of War. I’ve never even played a God of War game but last year’s E3 got me pumped to jump into this world. Horizon Zero Dawn was the same thing which is why it’s now anxiously sitting in my Amazon cart waiting to be purchased. A first impression can stick with you and get your heart set on playing something completely out of your comfort zone.
Of course, first impressions – even E3 impressions – don’t always work out the way you want to. When I saw the trailer for Yarny I was nothing short of joyful because of how cute that little guy was. But, when I finally got my hands on the game I found myself disappointed at how quickly the cute appeal fell to the wayside and I got bored with the platforming. It’s made me anxious about how quick I am to pick up any indie that captures my attention – of course not anxious enough to stop trying them.
Finding new indies is part of the reason is I’m looking forward to this year’s E3. I’ll be done working and can spend the whole day immersing myself in what’s coming next. And while spending the whole day at my dad’s just watching livestreams while I read or play games is a big part of my excitement, I also feel like I’m really a part of the gaming community and can get hyped in the same way. Plus, now that I’ve begun to branch out and play different genres, I’m so excited to see what catches my fancy now.
And as excited I am about a new season of games, I need to get ready for the newest season of my favorite reality show right now. So, how do first impressions affect you when it comes to what games you want? Do you go off of first reactions from E3 or trailers like me? Or do you wait a while to see if the hype dies down? And is anyone here watching the Bachelorette too?
