Hello GI community! I am starting a new series of blogs today, in which I review recent movies that I've seen. I know that this is a video game website, but I thought introducing another form of entertainment into my blogs would add some variety to the user blogs section. So without further ado, here is my review of Monsters University!
Monsters University is the prequel to Pixar's Monsters Inc. which released in 2001. The movie follow Mike Wazowski as he goes through college to become a professional scarer. While at college he meets Jimmy Sullivan, a monster whose family is famous for having some of the best scarers. While Mike tries to charter a new path for his life, Sully tries to live up to his family name. Both of them get into trouble, and hijinks follow.
If you have seen a previous Pixar movie, you know that they have a reputation to uphold. They have produced some of the best movies in recent memory, animated or otherwise. And while they have had some misses in the past, *cough* Cars series *cough*, they still maintain a high bar of quality unlike many of the other movie studios around. I can happily say that their quality maintains its series of excellence with Monsters University.
A prequel to Monsters Inc. may not have seemed necessary, and in all honesty it isn't. But Pixar uses this story to introduce a new audience to these extremely likable and charming characters. The movie is missing an emotional connection that was previously held by the little girl Boo. However, the movie doesn't suffer for it. Instead Pixar went for making a fun movie that has the antics of a college comedy while still appealing to kids. In that regard the movie is a resounding success, one that had me laughing at spiders with jerry curls, pig chasing, and just overall charm and wit not found in many other animated movies. If Pixar keeps cranking out movies of this level, sign me up for a second semester.
