Thanks to Metal Arcade, I was given the opportunity to review Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians, a new action-adventure game completely fueled by music. This game is the coolest thing I've seen since Beat Hazard.
If you know me, you know that I am a big part of the music world AND the video game world. I was writing for international Indie music magazine, WHOA Magazine, with people reading my stuff all over the world. And then I had the Game Informer experience to enrich my expertise. I am still caught in this cavern between the two, music writing or video game writing? This is what makes melodic games like these so intriguing for me. If I had to compare it to something, I'd say it's like someone took elements of Rayman and Beat Hazard and smashed them together. Beat Hazard, if you don't already know, also uses the beat of music to fuel the game's experience. Beatbuddy just brings it to a whole new level. I found myself bobbing my head during gameplay because the music was so damn catchy! Visually, the game is beautiful. It boasts layered 2D illustrations so that Beatbuddy sometimes swims between rocks even though they look 2D.
I highly recommend you check this game out on Steam, it's going for $14.99 only. And be sure to look for my review on it coming up in the next few days on Metal Arcade. Here's the reveal trailer, if you are interested. If you like music, you need to try this game.
