We all know that franchise. It has a lot of games in its history, and they just keep making more. And many say that they should either stop for a year of two, and some say that they should just stop entirely. This is the game franchises that have a lot of sequels and spin-offs, along with how long they should take a break, if at all make more. This is just my opinion, so please don't take this for a fact. Enjoy!
(Final Fantasy franchise)
There have been a lot of games in the final fantasy franchise. With there being fourteen in the numbered series, and with a countless number of spin-offs(Final Fantasy XIII-2?), it's easy to say that there are an abundant number of games in this very popular and recognizable franchise. And while I can say that I've enjoyed a few of these games(Final Fantasy X is my favorite, and Final Fantasy XIII is my most disliked), I've really just stopped trying to get back into this franchise nowadays. And while Final Fantasy XV better not be as bad as XIV, I can say that I, even when trying, can't be too excited for it.
How it should continue: Don't make so many games. Plain and simple. Take a break, release a new IP, and then look back a Final Fantasy afterwards and make a new one. A good break from Final Fantasy isn't a bad thing, because I stopped playing after I heard of XIII-2. A few less spin-offs wouldn't be too much to ask for, either, because I can't even name one now, for I've stopped trying to remember all of their names(I barely remember Tactics). Square should take a break, work on a few different games, and then come back to this franchise.
(Kingdom Hearts franchise)
With only two games in the numbered series, this might seem like a waste of time to write. But, this isn't for the numbered series(although I'm extremely glad that there will soon be three games in the numbered series), but rather, it's for the countless number of spin-offs that Square Enix has given us since Kingdom Hearts II came out. And while they say that it was to get players prepared for the story of Kingdom Hearts III, I still don't think that all those spin-offs were necessary.
How it should continue: No. More. Spin-offs! I am sick of seeing another spin-off pass me by because I don't want to have to go out a buy a DS and a 3DS just to play them(I already own a PSP), and it's ridiculous that it has taken, from my count(correct me in the comments if I'm wrong), five spin-offs to explain what is going to happen in the much hyped third installment. Why couldn't they just make an incredibly long KHIII? I would be okay with a longer Kingdom Hearts game. I think that they could have just taken all of those spin-offs and put everything story wise from them into KHIII.
(Total War franchise)
While I'm not much of a PC gamer, I do love the Total War franchise(I own and love Empire: Total War, which is pictured above), so I can easily say that I look forward to new installments. But, at the same time, there are a lot of them, and it doesn't seem that they will slow down anytime soon. And that disappoints me, because I don't want to get franchise fatigue because Sega decides to cash in on the one good franchise they have(Sonic games have constantly been terrible lately, and Binary Domain didn't do as well I thought it would).
How it should continue: take a year off from development. I can easily sink in hours and hours into whatever game is released in this franchise, so I can wait for about four to five years for a new Total War to come out. I can even do without the extra content. They could take that time and think about where they haven't yet taken this franchise. I guess this is only hear because I want them to take a well deserved break, just so that they can think of Total War: Space.
(Resident Evil franchise)
I already did how well they are doing horror genre wise, but now I want to just look at this franchise as a whole on game releases. And while many say that Resident Evil 5 was the beginning of the downfall from greatness that this franchise was known for in the survival horror world, I think that this game wasn't it. The year of 2012 was the downfall of greatness for this franchise. With only one great game out of the three that were released that year, and the best being a 3DS spin-off, it's easy to say that Resident Evil has lost its way. And while Resident Evil: Revelations was a good game(my review is already up if you want to check it out with the rest of my blogs), the other spin-off was a sub-par squad-based shooter, and we all know that 6 didn't do anything to make fans of the franchise any bit less displeased.
How it should continue: Enough spin-offs, already. Most of them are just disappointments that nobody wanted(ORC), and the ones that are good are just as easily forgotten because of the lack of a number beside the name. The numbered franchise should take at least a two year break, so that people can at least try to forget about 6, while they focus on making Resident Evil what it should be, because the numbered franchise has disappointed just as much as the spin-offs have since Resident Evil 4 came out.
(Call Of Duty franchise)
This franchise had to have been mentioned in this blog, and I know that many people have differing opinions on this franchise. But, I'm not here to say whether I like or dislike Call Of Duty(although it should be obvious that I do like them), but rather to talk about the number of sequels that are in this franchise, along with the handheld spin-offs. Call Of Duty comes out every year, in November, without fail. And I buy every one before December is over, at the latest. But, I can say that I, one of the biggest fans of the franchise, has gotten some fatigue from the franchise, as well as many of my friends who play it with me. And the handheld games aren't usually much of anything worth mentioning, because they just aren't that good, from the horrible COD: Black Ops: Declassified to all of the DS games.
How it should continue: Take a good two year break. Release Ghosts, and then, after that, don't do anything other than map packs(at a cheaper price, but that's a discussion for another day). I don't think anybody would be too displeased if they heard that Call Of Duty was taking a break. Activision could do this, at the very least, to release a new IP, which they would make into a franchise as well, but I don't actually have a problem with that, as long as they don't Call Of Duty it. And no spin-offs. At all. None of them are worth playing, and I don't ever play any of them anymore. They just aren't worth the time of day for most, if not all, people.
I hope you've enjoyed this blog. I won't have my review of Portal 2 up until tomorrow, because I just want to play it a little more, to get my review better than if I were to do the review now. Tell me in the comments below what franchises you think should take a break, temporary or permanent, how you like this blog, or just what franchises I missed. My review of Resident Evil: Revelations was put up yesterday, so if you feel like seeing what I think about the best Resident Evil game of 2012, it's also in my blog's section of my page. Have a nice day!
