Today is November 28th, the day before my 19th birthday and for the sixth consecutive year I will be playing a Sly Cooper game. This tradition began back in 2008 when I was helping look for birthday presents for one of my younger brother at Toy R Us. I stumbled upon the video game section at the store where they were selling two PS2 games for ten dollars. One of the games I decided to buy was Sly 2: Band of Thieves, the other was World Championship Paintball but let’s not talk about that…
I remembered seeing commercials for Sly Cooper games when they were first being released but had never played them before. Right after starting to play I instantly fell in love with the game and continued playing until my birthday where I received a PS3 and then sort of forgot about Sly Cooper for a while. Fast-forward a year to a few days before my birthday where my PS3 and GameCube were both broken so I could only really play PS2 and DS games. So I rummaged through my PS2 games and pulled out Sly 2 and began playing again. I only played a few days before I was distracted by the games I received for my birthday (I also got my first issue of GameInformer) and soon after Christmas.
I didn’t play Sly 2 again until the next November where I was going back to beat old games that I hadn’t finished in anticipation for Christmas where I knew I would be getting a a Wii and brand new PS3. As it became closer to my birthday I realized something, that I had played Sly 2 on the day before my birthday for the last two years and was due to do it again this year.
The tradition continued the next year where a few weeks before my birthday I was playing a different Sly Cooper game, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves. I was nearing the end when I decided to hold off on finishing it and not play again until the day before my birthday in order to continue the tradition, which I did and finished the game.
The following year I devoted mostly the entire day to playing the game. Unfortunately I won’t be able to do this year due to today being Thanksgiving and all, so I decided to start playing a week early to give myself enough time with the game. I will still play for a little while today thou, something I plan on doing ever November 28th as long as I have a Sly Cooper game and a system to play it on.
